Cuisinart SCO-60C Deluxe Can Opener

A sturdy hands free can opener for frequent use, priced well above its plastic sibling.

The short version

Buy it if
  • Kitchens that open several cans a week
  • People with arthritis or weak grip who want hands-free opening
  • Anyone who wants a steel appliance that matches stainless counters
Skip it if
  • You open a can once in a while and a manual opener is fine
  • You need smooth, safe lid edges around kids
  • Counter space is tight

What owners like

  • Opens cans with almost no hand effort, useful for people with weak grip
  • Heavy base stays put on large cans
  • Looks better on the counter than plastic openers
  • Easy to clean because the cutting arm comes off

Common complaints

  • The lever mechanism can wear out or stop catching after a period of use
  • Takes up counter space for a single job
  • Lids come off with a sharp edge, and aluminum lids do not stick to the magnet

Based on Cuisinart's instruction booklet and product page, TechGearLab and Reviewed testing of electric can openers including Cuisinart's CCO-50, and review roundups on OpenYourCan and Cooking Product Reviews.

What it does

A countertop electric can opener in brushed stainless steel that cuts the lid off with one press of a lever and holds it on a magnet.

  • Press the lever once and it cuts on its own, then stops when the lid is free
  • Can stays in place until you lift the lever
  • Magnet on the cutting arm holds steel lids after cutting
  • Cutting arm and lever lift off for washing, top rack dishwasher safe
  • Extra wide base meant to keep tall cans from tipping
  • Cord storage in the base, replacement lever sold by Cuisinart

Buy it if you open cans often, want a hands-free opener that will not tip on tall cans, and like a heavier steel body on the counter. The trade-off is price and bulk: Cuisinart's own plastic CCO-50 does the same job for much less, and like most lid-puncture openers it leaves a sharp lid edge.

Questions

Is the Cuisinart SCO-60 can opener dishwasher safe?

Only the removable lever and cutting arm. Cuisinart says to put it on the top rack or hand wash it. The motor base should be wiped with a damp cloth and never put in water.

What is the difference between the SCO-60 and SCO-60C?

SCO-60C is the model Cuisinart sells in Canada. The US listing is SCO-60, with the same Power Cut blade and removable arm.

Why won't my Cuisinart can opener lever stay down?

The lever assembly is a wear part. Cuisinart sells a replacement lever, and it is covered under the 3 year warranty for defects.

Can it open pull-tab or rimless cans?

No. Cuisinart says not to use it on pull-tab, rimless, angled-corner, aerosol or flammable-liquid cans.
